Dream Journal: Help Yourself Remember Dreams

Keeping a dream journal, why would you want to? After all, everyone dreams. According to experts, you process certain events, feelings, and emotions in your dreams. Writing down dreams could help you understand your dreams better and therefore understand yourself a bit better too. You can read more about that in this blog.

What are Dreams?

Dreams are nothing more than images, sounds, thoughts, and feelings that surface during your sleep. During your sleep you go from light sleep to REM sleep. During this REM sleep, your brain becomes active again, and feelings, emotions, and thoughts are processed that you do not have time for during the day. In other words, you dream.

Everyone dreams differently. After all, we are all different and we all experience different things in our lives. However, there are a number of different dream types that are more common and can say something about how and why you dream. For example, there are:

  • daydreams
  • clairvoyant dreams
  •  warning dreams
  •  processing dreams

Daydreaming

You might think of daydreaming as escaping into your own fantasy world. This shuts down a part of the brain, causing it to focus on specific parts and options that you have. For example: do I feel like going to that birthday or not? What will happen if I do go? And what will happen if I don’t go? By focusing on these parts, your brain is closed off from the rest of the world. Scientists agree that this can reduce stress and anxiety.  If that isn’t enough, daydreaming can also boost creativity and problem solving skills. So go ahead, let your mind wander a bit!

Clairvoyant Dreams

Clairvoyant dreams are lucid dreams in which you perceive important things. They often give a glimpse of the past, present, and future. Humans can contact the supernatural through spiritual experiences or telepathy. During clairvoyant dreams you manifest your perceptions about your own or someone else’s life. For example: you have a clairvoyant dream in which you are going to meet a certain person, and promptly you meet this person the next day. We’ve all had dreams like this!

Warning Dreams

Warning dreams want to warn you about something or someone. Usually these dreams are about an event in the past, the outcome of which you will now see clearly. Perhaps it makes you realize that you want to go back on a certain choice you made earlier, or it makes it clear to you why certain situations sometimes go wrong. They are actually dreams that make your intuition more clear to you and they can have a predictive character. Although it’s likely that this “prediction” is just a likely outcome that you’ve already worked out subconsciously. Nothing paranormal, although a bit maybe a bit primal.

Processing Dreams

Processing dreams go deeper than warning dreams and are said to relate to certain themes in our lives that we still struggle with. You could say that these dreams provide growth from within yourself. Certain patterns can become clear to you and experiences can be processed.

Keeping a Dream Diary

During our dreams we experience quite a few things. Keep a notebook next to your bed so that you can write down your dreams immediately after waking up. If you wake up at night after having a dream, take a moment to think about what you dreamed about. Then write it down as far as you can remember, if you’re not too sleepy for it, of course. We have beautiful notebooks in our assortment in which you can write down your most beautiful dreams.

Why Write Down Dreams?

Keeping a dream log can give you a picture of what you are struggling with or thinking about at that moment. By writing down your dreams upon awakening, you have something tangible that you can look back on later and even discover patterns. Writing down your dreams is encouraged by many psychologists, for example Ann Faraday, so that you can learn to understand the meaning of your dreams. In addition, there are a number of other reasons to keep a dream journal:

  1. It Keeps Your Dreams and Fantasy Alive
Memorizing and writing down our dreams takes some practice. As the day goes by, we easily forget our dreams. If you develop the habit of writing them down as soon as you wake up, you will keep your dreams and fantasies alive! And it is also nice to read them back, provided you have had a beautiful dream of course.
  2. You Explore Your Subconscious This theory about dreams says that your subconsciousness is trying to tell you something and it communicates with you through your dreams. By writing these down and thinking them through, you would be listening to your own inner voice.
  3. It Provides Insight into Your Sleeping Pattern Writing down your dreams could help you discover and better understand certain sleeping problems or sleeping patterns. This way you can check with yourself whether you are getting enough rest or whether you need more sleep. You could put certain gems in your bedroom to improve your sleep rhythm too. You can read more about this in our blog Gemstones in the Home. You could also hang a Dreamcatcher  combined with a Spiritual Cleanse Ritual to stop bad dreams!

Dream Diary

So your dreams could tell you anything. They can tell you what’s on your mind and what you’re thinking about. You could learn a lot from your dreams by writing them down in a notebook.
